When you work from home you often have to submit your receipts for traveling and incidentals. One of the most common ways to do that, if you aren't lucky enough to have an app, is to tape receipts to a piece of paper and scan them into your computer. That way you can email to where they need to go quickly and easily. To recreate that, I taped my receipts from my food shopping to create a scan. I used a mixture of new receipts and ones that had faded in my wallet, then I checked the scan for legibility. Most scanners will enhance the image you are scanning and that certainly helps with receipts.

For those printing large volumes with no real budget constraints, then laser printers are the way to go, given their high capacities and great reliability. However, for most people, inkjet printers are likely to suffice given that they’re more affordable and perfectly serviceable for day-to-day usage. Standard document printing is decent too thanks to the low-printing costs, although we wouldn’t recommend this Canon if you only want a printer for such workloads. Our tests showed it to be one of slowest document printers we’ve reviewed in a long time, while the printer’s dye inks are more more suited to photo paper than plain paper. It’s also missing useful features such as duplex printing and faxing. Brother had the highest satisfaction with the quality of output for everyday documents printed using the company's own consumables (9.1) and third-party consumables (8.7). Samsung also rated 9.1 for satisfaction with printing using its own consumables. Brother also had the highest rating for ease of setup (8.8) and reliability (8.9); only Samsung had a smaller percentage of printers needing repair in the last 12 months. Two percent of Samsung printers needed repairs compared to 3 percent of Brother printers. At the opposite end of the spectrum, 12 percent of Xerox printers needed repairs— although that's a distinct improvement from last year's 18 percent.
HP Envy Pro 6452 All-in-One Printer
You might wonder whether you need a printer at all in 2022, but the reality is that ‘hard copy’ is alive and well. The most obvious moment you’ll long for one is when printing a courier or post label. Using Royal Mail can be cheaper when you go through the website, for example, but this requires a home printer. Clothing return labels present a similar challenge, especially when the return has been organised by the retailer. To help, we’ve been doing hands-on testing of the top models available in 2022 – from trusted brands including Epson, Canon, HP and Brother – and researching the key specs to look out for.
Our tester found a difference in color when printing photos on photo paper, saying that there were reddish tints to brown colors that weren’t there when using standard printer paper. Overall, it performed well when printing in color and was a very good value for all of its features. The print quality is not the best, especially when it comes to photos and copies. Standard prints were fine, and scans were clear, but printed photos on matte photo paper came out darker than their originals, according to our tests. Glossy photo paper did a bit better, but the photos were not as crisp as they could have been. In short, this printer is best for quickly printing documents rather than photos.

It’s a superb choice for printing photos, graphics, flyers or worksheets. Unlike normal all-in-one models, Epson has optimized this printer specifically for photo output. It delivers detailed prints with vibrant colors by using a six-color ink system—two more than found in the regular EcoTank line.
Printers range in price from around £40 to more than £800, so we’ve slimmed this down to only include home printers that really stand out. We unbox each printer and set them up just as you would, adding paper, downloading the companion app if available, and using the built-in screen . We install ink cartridges, fill ink reservoirs and run print head alignment routines. Finally, we print a series of documents on standard A4 in both black and white and colour, as well as a selection of photos if applicable. A dedicated monochrome laser printer will cost between $200 and $300.
It can print photos on glossy paper, but take note that it will take a little longer. Our tester said that it could fit even in small desk spaces and was ideal for a dorm . The input tray is angled up, making it less bulky overall, and it can hold up to 60 pages. It can also support different paper sizes, including 3 x 5-, 4 x 6-, and 5 x 7-inch photo paper.
For most families and homebound office workers, this is plenty, although demand is rising as we're seeing more printing from home. Typically, the cheaper the printer, the fewer the functions and features—the less the machine does—and thus the lesser need for a large, option-rich control panel. While a few of today’s low-priced AIOs have roomy color touch screens, most employ simple panels with a few buttons and status LEDs. Single-function printers do just one thing—print, naturally—while all-in-ones can also copy, scan, and sometimes fax documents. In terms of design, most AIOs are printers with a flatbed scanner sitting on top. It's an easy-to-use handheld gadget with a small QWERTY keyboard (it doesn't connect to a PC or phone) that works on either battery or AC power.
